Media To Consume Over Spring Break

Spring break is a time eagerly anticipated by many, offering a well-deserved break from the routine of daily life and a chance to recharge and relax. Whether you're a student looking forward to two weeks of freedom or a teacher seeking a brief escape, spring break presents the perfect opportunity to indulge in activities that bring joy, adventure, and rejuvenation.

In this article, I’ll be covering all the basic necessities of human life - books, music, and movies - and specific recommendations of ones you can incorporate into your break for the best two weeks of your life.

Books:

Whether you're lounging on a sunny beach, nestled in a cozy cabin, or simply enjoying some well-deserved downtime at home, a good book can transport you to new worlds, spark your imagination, and ignite your curiosity. Here is a curated selection of books across various genres, perfect for your spring break reading list. From gripping thrillers to heartwarming romances, thought-provoking fiction to captivating classics, there's something for every reader to enjoy during this season of relaxation and renewal.

  • Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi. Blending fantasy with themes of oppression, social justice, and resilience, and with its vibrant characters and gripping plot, this novel is a must-read for anyone seeking a thrilling and relevant story.

  • Little Women by Lousia May Alcott. Themes like the importance of family, going after what you really want, true love, forgiveness, and redemption are all part of the human condition. If you are ready to read a heartwarming book that will bring a bit of sunshine into your day, you should explore this book.

  • The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. This book is a profound exploration of mental illness, identity, and societal pressures. It not only sheds light on the complexities of mental health but also prompts important conversations about the expectations placed on women in the 1950s and how they continue to resonate today. - Both this and Little Women are perfect to get into during International Women’s Month!

  • The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. You should read this book for its masterful storytelling, richly drawn characters, and evocative prose. This story is a rich and immersive reading experience that offers both literary depth and page-turning suspense as you follow Theo, the main character, through his journey of grief and companionship.

  • Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. For a more heartfelt, homely feeling book, “Me Before You” has authentic, well-rounded characters, making them much more likable and realistic. This book is about life and the importance of choices, tugging at your heartstrings until well after you put it down.

Songs:

Music is the gateway to the soul. If it’s time for you to wind down for the day, or even just have some background noise while you go about your business, the right soundtrack can elevate your spring break experience to new heights. From breezy pop anthems and feel-good classics to infectious indie tunes and laid-back beats, these songs capture the essence of springtime and promise to infuse your break with energy, nostalgia, and good vibes. So plug in your headphones, turn up the volume, and let the music transport you to sun-soaked destinations and carefree moments of bliss. Set up for one song a day:

  1. “Alley Rose” - Conan Gray

  2. “Mortal Projections” - Djo

  3. “Dancing In The Courthouse” - Dominic fike

  4. “All The Stars” - Kendrick Lamar, SZA

  5. “Cologne” - Beabadoobee

  6. “It Won't Always Be Like This” - Inhaler

  7. “Heroes” - David Bowie

  8. “Fear and Fridays” - Zach Bryan

  9. “Tell Me Why” - Taylor Swift

  10. “Why Do You Feel So Down” - Declan McKenna

  11. “Don’t Stop” - Fleetwood Mac

  12. “Island In The Sun” - Weezer

  13. “Sundress” - A$AP Rocky

  14. “Ivy” - Frank Ocean

  15. “On My Mama” - Victoria Monet

  16. “Is This Love” - Bob Marley and The Wailers

  17. “From The Start” - Laufey

Movies:

As the days get longer and winter fades into memory, there is no better time to indulge in the magic of cinema. Whether you’re seeking a heartwarming coming-of-age or a captivating Sci-Fi, here are some must-watch movies to elevate your time off. So, grab your popcorn, settle in, and let the screen transport you away.

  • Little Women - If the book isn’t necessarily for you, the 2019 film directed by Greta Gerwig should easily be at the top of your list. It perfectly encapsulates the feeling of home and family and love while also leaving important commentary on traditional gender roles and expectations placed on women in society.

  • Dune: Part 2 - Not to flood you with Timothée Chalamet features, but this movie truly exceeded my expectations for a series in which I fell asleep during the first movie. Even better than its predecessor, this film truly indulges in the ethnic roots behind the books, carrying much more of a classic storytelling style with rich and exotic world-building and complex characters.

  • Mean Girls (2004) - The new musical movie seems to be a hit or miss among the masses, but we can all agree that the original is an iconic classic. Perfect for any mood or any setting, from the vibe to the characters to the plot, this movie is perfect in all aspects and should be queued up for any long road trip or night spent comfortably at home.

As you embark on your eagerly awaited spring break, filled with the promise of relaxation and refreshing, remember to embrace the essence of the season by indulging in activities that bring joy and fulfillment. Whether you’re diving into captivating books that transport you to new worlds, creating the perfect soundtrack with songs that uplift and energize, or immersing yourself into timeless films that entertain and inspire, this article is here as a comprehensive guide to enhance your break. So, seize the opportunity to unwind, explore, and embrace the moments of bliss that spring break offers, making it truly the best two weeks of your life.
