Homecoming Sports Events

October has come to an end, so this calls for the perfect opportunity to talk about the most anticipated school event in October: Homecoming!!! This year, homecoming occurred the weekend of October 13-15, and the sporting events were the highlight of the weekend! Let’s give a good rundown of the stats this weekend, because the results of the games may seem quite shocking to those keeping up with Tower Hill’s current figures.

Girls’ Volleyball: The first sporting event of homecoming weekend was the girl’s volleyball game against Wilmington Charter on Friday, October 13, at 7:00pm. The stands were packed with the student section bleeding green and white, and the spirit was unmatched. Even though Tower Hill had the home-field advantage, Charter put up a great fight.

The game went all the way to 5 sets, with Tower Hill taking the win at the end with a final match score of 15-10. Junior Lydia Spencer ended up with the most kills of the game - 25 to be exact - as well as gaining 4 aces and 8 digs. Senior Captains Molly Pietlock also racked up the game stats, including 40 assists and 15 kills. The Tower Hill girl’s volleyball team fought till the end, and it paid off, leading homecoming weekend off on the right foot.

Girls’ Field Hockey: The next event was the girl’s field hockey game, occurring at 11am on Saturday, October 14th against conference rival, Wilmington Friends. After a tough loss against Friends early in the season, Tower Hill Field Hockey made sure to come to homecoming ready to crush the Quakers.

Tower Hill ended up dominating the game, with the final being 2-0. Junior Bea Nace was able to score within the first 5 minutes of the game, giving Tower Hill the early lead. Then, in the second quarter, Junior Ashley Vanderslice was able to gain Tower Hill’s second point with an assist from Freshman Charlotte Vanni. The win was a great lead-off to the rest of the weekend festivities and a great addition to the Volleyball win the night before.

Boys’ Soccer: The next sport up is the Boy’s soccer game against Wilmington friends on Saturday after the field hockey game. The boys played hard and gave it their all, but sadly they could not attain the win against the Quakers. The final score of the game was 0-3, and though none of the Tower Hill players could get the ball in the net, Goalie and captain Robbie Saunders had 5 saves throughout the game. A tough loss and the first during Homecoming weekend.

Football: The final event of the weekend was the boys football game against Tatnall on Saturday the 14th at 3pm. With the rain coming down hard that day and most of the morning festivities coming to a close, the Hillers struggled to pull through, and ended up losing 7-55 against the Hornets. Though the Tatnall School dominated most of the game, Tower Hill was able to gain a touchdown in the 2nd quarter, a 9 yard pass from quarterback Michael Waesco to junior Aiden Pratt to score the 6 points, and Tommy Hanna secured the final point with a solid field goal. It was a tough way to end Saturday, but the boys played hard and never gave up.

Overall, it seems that the girls teams dominated Homecoming weekend, and sadly the boys teams could not pull through. Even though it was a rainy weekend, many fans showed up to watch and support their teams, regardless of the score. It is safe to say that Homecoming weekend for sports was an exciting one.
